[kə'lʌmbɪə 'rɪvə], Fluss im Westen Nordamerikas, entspringt in den kanadischen Rocky Mountains und erreicht nach mehrmaliger Richtungsänderung an der Bundesstaatengrenze Oregon/Washington (USA) den Pazifik; 1 995 km lang, davon 801 km in Kanada; 650 km sind schiffbar, davon rd. 180 km für Hochseeschiffe (bis zu den Häfen von Portland in Oregon und Vancouver in Washington).
 
Der Energiegewinnung, der Hochwasserregulierung sowie der Bewässerung im relativ trockenen Tal des Columbia River dienen die zahlreichen Staudämme. Diese wurden ab den 1930er-Jahren in den USA errichtet (v. a. Grand Coulee Dam und Bonneville Dam), ab 1964 unter Kostenbeteiligung der USA auch auf kanadischem Gebiet. Die Kraftwerke am Columbia River haben wesentlich zur Industrialisierung im Nordwesten der USA beigetragen (Aluminiumproduktion seit 1940).
